Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne hosted a group of eight young Colombian athletes visiting the UK as part of an initiative to support accomplished young people.
Accompanied by the Ambassador of Colombia to the UK, HE Mauricio Rodríguez and the director of Colombia’s Institute of Sport, Andrés Botero, the young athletes from Buenaventura enjoyed a tour of the Palace of Westminster, visiting both Houses of Parliament and ending at the GREAT Pavilion at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in Whitehall
During the meeting Minister Browne said:
“I am delighted that these eight Colombian role models have been able to travel to the London 2012 Olympic Games, thanks to the strong partnership between the Colombian and British Governments.
These young athletes embody the ideals of the Olympic Truce through their desire to promote sport as a force for inclusion and as a way to improve lives. I am sure they will use their experiences here to share those values with others on their return to Colombia.
I am pleased that we are supporting this work which will provide a legacy for young people both in Buenaventura and across Colombia. It is precisely the kind of inspiring project that brings life to our ever closer relationship with Colombia.”
After the meeting the young delegation attended a Basketball match at the Olympic Park.
